The sunxi SPDIF driver is limited/broken. It allows 16bit max. afaik. JackofAll fixed it on his system (but unfortunatley never published the patch).
I wouldn't use that onboard SPDIF output anyhow. You can't expect high quality audio. You can check the useable interface/driver parameters with cat /proc/asound/cardX/stream0 | more replace cardX with the respective interface index (aplay -l). Good luck.
