i entered this code with this result which looks promising, but so far
no sign of squeezelite or of any devices in advanced>local player.: 

root@adamd:/home/adamd# sudo gpasswd -a squeezeboxserver audio
Adding user squeezeboxserver to group audio
root@adamd:/home/adamd# groups squeezeboxserver
squeezeboxserver : nogroup audio
root@adamd:/home/adamd# 

I will try rebooting the whole system, although wierdly when I did thuis
last time, LMS seemed to foget I had set it up- it made me login again
and set up the library, although the plugins were still installed. i
wonder what that means. anyway here goes....
