Something clever happens with XBMc on my odroid device. There is a function in XBMC to turn off the device and this can also turn off the Television attached to the odroid. This suggests there is a control function that is implementable via the hdmi connection. (the only other possibility being the ethernet port).
If you want a low power server the odroid does the job very satisfactorily. Any similar small form computer with adequate power should do the job.
