Other contributors here are *far* more qualified to answer this than I
am.  But I imagine that the consensus would be to use the version of
perl that your distro provides.  And I'd think you'd pick your distro on
the basis of personal preference, feature set and availability of
updates.

While I've toyed around with a fair number of different distros on
different architectures, I feel like I only really have a working
understanding of Ubuntu & Fedora on Intel/AMD platforms.
