So...I'm wondering if the real culprit here is the fact that Ubuntu
14.10 is "half" implementing systemd...i.e. still uses upstart but has
systemd available?

I should really do a new install of Ubuntu 14.10 and see what's going
on.  But in the mean time, could you try this, and report back what you
see?

If Ubuntu 14.10 has a systemctl utility, then I've screwed up the system
identification logic in my install script.
