hi hdhwx42,

I have not done any testing i2s devices but this might help.

Check to location of your playback device. Note, in the example below,
my i2s DAC is using "card 1, subdevice 0" not "card 0".

If you followed the instructions in your link the asound.conf was
referencing hw:0,0 and card 0, Change these to hw:1,0 and card 1.

Code:
--------------------
    $ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
  card 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 0: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA]
  Subdevices: 8/8
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
  Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
  Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
  Subdevice #4: subdevice #4
  Subdevice #5: subdevice #5
  Subdevice #6: subdevice #6
  Subdevice #7: subdevice #7
  card 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 1: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 IEC958/HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_dac], device 0: HifiBerry DAC HiFi
pcm5102a-hifi-0 []
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

--------------------

Good luck
Greg
