Yes, it is linux's reference implementation of mdns. (It is also one of the brainchilds of Lehnard Poettering, which might indicate some dependency with other parts of the linux system...) I don't see clearly the breadth of alternatives there are to the avahi code (working fine for me, BTW). BSD does have a stack (google seems to indicate Apple uses it) and interestingly dnsmasq does include features related to dns-sd. jmdns is available for Java. Looking on CPAN I also see perl modules related to mdns. Here is the sleep proxy client project I mentioned above: 'SleepProxyClient' (https://github.com/awein/SleepProxyClient) 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) SqueezeLite Squeezebox Server 7.8.1 (Debian 7.5) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes by StuartUSA Local Player, BBC iPlayer, SwitchPlayer by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97803
