The volume control implementation in squeezebox hardware is 24 bit I'm
quite sure squeezelite is similar. The majority of files you have is 16
bit . There are no true 24 bit DAC's even if they work in that domain
the practical resolutions is typically 17-20 bits . The vast majority of
recordings you have rarely have s/n ratio that touches 16 bit so knock
of a bit or two there to .

I USED TO FUZZ ABOUT THIS TO ALWAYS SUGGESTING 100% FOR MAXIMUM FIDELITY
, BUT THERE REALLY IS NO RATIONALE FOR THAT IN PRACTICE.

If you do as you suggest , adjust the analog volume so the 100% is as
loud as you ever want, and use the upper range of LMS volume you don’t
challenge any limit of the system . And in that scenario even if you do
lower the volume to something really low in LMS .
The actuall acoustical volume is so low that you could not pick up any
loss of fidelity .

It can in some cases even have a slight advantage to not use 100%
volume, many oversampling filters and similar in DAC's have problems
with intersample overshots , this can happen with modern overcompressed
recordings making them sound even worse , so backing of -3dB -6dB gives
your dac some headroom . But this is not really a design error in the
dac ,it's an broken recording , but thats reality . Having better
handling fault situations is nice
