Yeeeeeeeeees! Removing audio=on from /mnt/mmcblk0p1/config.txt worked. Using "Digital" as the control name now works.
I think that having both cards set as default causes problems! I think it will be cleaner if I can figure out how to address both card and control though, so both can be passed on the commandline, but this is a step in the right direction.
