24 bits makes sense when recording (to get headroom / safety margin),
but once the material is recorded, it can definitely be normalized to
something that easily fits into 16 bits. Have you ever come across an
actual, released recording that used a range of more than 16 bits? 48
KHz made more sense in the days of bad, old analog low pass filters,
these days technology is good enough that the 2 kHz (between 20 and 22
kHz) is more than enough for good filtering even with 44.1 kHz. But that
is just my personal opinion, and flame wars have been waged in the
audiophile section over much smaller matters...
