I think what he was referring to, was the dithering bug, whereby the
dithering that was being applied in the binary firmware resulted in
noise ("static") on the output. 

In any case, ISTR, the Pi's PWM'd analogue output, by their own specs,
was only capable of 11 bit resolution anyway, which is probably why most
people who have listened to it, consider it to be low-fi..... I'd expect
the OP to be able to discern the output from the HiFiBerry DAC, compared
to that, but hey, if he (or anyone else for that matter) is happy
listening to the on-board analogue output of the Pi, and hear no
difference when compared to an out-board DAC capable of CD resolution,
then that's what matters......
