I discovered that, if I install v1.2.6 GUI, use flirc_util, and select the 'dfu' command, then 'default' firmware is installed into the FLIRC - although I'm still confused, because it also refers to '2.6' (rather than 1.2.6); some confusion (at least on my part) between GUI version and firmware version (and see my post above). Anyway, I was then able to install the .cfg, and the FLIRC works well now with my Squeezebox IR remote. Thanks again! Living room: SB Touch, with coax to: Marantz PM7005, TDL RTL3 speakers.
