The picture is the same no matter what background activity is going on. Same on your TV - the image is decoded perfectly every frame whether the TV processor is idle or busy updating the TV guide or recording a program on another channel, or what.
Equally my media NAS is a busy PC doing backups and serving emails and a few websites while streaming to five or so squeezeboxes and a couple of HD tellies, and all my media sits on an AES encrypted hard drive.
