OK so user hits update, pi looks for new update and confirms that it exists. Pi downloads update to external cheap usb flash drive along with configuration files for basic use and any other viable configuration files and a boot able installation script. Then reboots........ pi launches bootable installation script from external cheap usb drive which formats sd card and resizes it. Then script installs the complete update and once done hands back to the new install. It firstly checks for configuration files and installs them then verifys itself before deleting the contents of the cheap usb drive and retaking boot. The whole thing now waits for the next update and you didn't even need to take the sd card out? Could it work?
