Thanks bpa.

Got it working.

1) it looks like that I have to first plug the USB drive and only then
power the rpi.
2) power was an issue with my portable Samsung SE-118 USB drive. I
choose double USB plug.
3) Then I had to activate in FileTypes under CD player: FLAC =
cdda2wav/FLAC (as on windows based LMS)
(PCM=cdda2wav is not working. Could I also go this way? What is
missing?)
4) I could then listen to music, but the drive was terrible slow. It
tooks 30 to 60 seconds until a track started to play.
5) I have then used a fully powered USB drive box from LG GSA-E60L.
Everythings works very smooth and fast.
I guess the differnence between the both is that the Samsung drive
has no bulit in buffer, but the LG has. Does this makes sense?
