Restarting the daemon really doesn’t do anything different.  It does
check for dangling devices and processes, and cleans it up.  But the
commands used to start playback are identical.  

Do you have more than one LMS server in your network?

It might help to use tail to watch the log real-time from a ssh
session.

tail -f /var/log/pcp_bt.log

Also Telnet to your lms cli and listen to see what lms is seeing.
