The RPI route is of course also a good option, but looking to you
current situation I was wondering where your music collection is stored
then? I didn't took that into account in my first response. This
collection can easily be put on another disc of course, that is just a
config option LMS.

Btw:
I am running LMS on self installed Linux systems for 10 years now
(Debian Stable and Xubuntu LTS) and also experimented with a separated
/var plus different locations for my music collection. It is all
possible, but in the end the defaults are usually the easiest for
maintenance and trouble shooting purposes.
