Planning for new hardware is something that you should seriously think
about  but back to your original question. 

LMS has no inherent limitation on database size.  Memory is very
important for performance especially on a 7.7.* system. 

If LMS is becoming unreliable - the initial step would be to delete the
LMS database and rebuild it especially if a clean scan has not been done
for a while. You could also clear many cache files. Perhaps also stop
LMS and do a fsck.

Reinstall LMS is only required if you think LMS has become corrupted -
you could just delete pref files to do a "new installation"
