The output settings were correct and resaving them didn't help, so I selected Analog Audio and saved that. On reboot, Squeezelite started, so I reselected the DAC and rebooted again. Squeezelite started and showed as running the autostart favourite, but there was no audio output. I still have that card but have started again with a new image and that is working as expected. I can experiment further if it would be useful. BTW, the reduced boot time with 6.1 is significant, 20 secs vs 30 secs with 6.0 on the Pi2. Excellent!
