I also tried without wpa_supplicant file so that is not the cause of the
problem.

According to the RPi information, the boot sequence first tries to find
a file on USB, and then attempts to read bootcode.bin from the µSDcard.
This code is executed by the GPU and reads start.elf, which reads
config.txt. Start.elf exercises the video hardware (wich shows the
rainbow screen).

Since we do not even get to the rainbow screen there must be something
wrong on a very basic level.

Again, according to the RPi information, the ACT led should blink 3 or 4
times if there are problems with start.elf. Since that doesn't happen
this leaves USB or bootcode.bin.
