Yes, I saw bypassing the GUI as a futile attempt. So I was very
surprised when it suddenly worked. Here's some more info on this
particular instance:

I tried:
Flashing a new, fresh, PcP 6.1.0 std version and pairing with Bluetooth
as one of the first things after making sure everything as updated and
Squeezelite settings set for my hifiberry HAT.
Resetting the TV to factory settings, through its service menu.
Powercycling both BT controllers and whole units.
All combinations of all BT-related buttons on both devices.

Scanning through the GUI almost always found the TV and let it be
selectable for pairing. For some unknown reason it just failed pairing
and forced device removal.  The TV did never discover the PcP when put
in Discover-mode but immediately found other BT audio devices/speakers.

After manually pairing via SSH, everything works like a charm.
