I have tried upsampling everything to 24/192, I think!  My command line
now looks like this:

It does indeed seem to fix the problem.  From what you've said that
means that the problem is likely to be in the driver for the DAC, is
that right?  If so is that something I can take up with HiFiBerry, if I
can ever get a login to their forum?

Incidently before trying upsampling, I specified a delay (I tried up to
1 second) for switching rates with the -r parameter (e.g. -r
192000:1000) but that didn't work.
