I remember that the first installation of ApplePi utilized a 'generic' driver in piCorePlayer and at this point I had controls, including how much gain to have - I made sure max was 0 dB. When a dedicated driver was made available as I was using in piCorePlayer v6 until yesterday, there was no way that I could change anything in the ALSAmixer.
