Yes, I think bcm2835 is the built-in headphone jack. I don't know
anything about the relative output levels of an Apple dongle and a
Chromecast audio, so it may be that what you're getting now is the
maximum.

This is something of a long shot, but what other output settings are
available for the Apple dongle? Near the top of the pCP Squeezelite
Settings page, on the Output Setting line, where you currently have
"hw:CARD=A,DEV=0" selected, click on the red "more>" to the right. You
should see all the available options listed, and you can select a
different one by clicking on it. If there is one beginning "iec958:" or
"plughw:", those might be worth a try.
