You could have tried using the 'Clean Install' option (under the 
'Options' button). A clean install moves your existing System Folder 
to 'Previous System Folder', then creates (and blesses) a new System 
Folder.

Then I would have deleted everything out of the new System Folder 
except for the actual System file, and copied everything else from 
the 'Previous System Folder'.

Reboot.
