Well I just tested my 8500 energy saver and it works as expected in OS 
10.1.4 with a Sonnet G4 405 Mhz and a Tampo ATA 100 PCI card.
In OS 9 on newer G4's most energy saver problems were caused by SCSI PCI 
cards not allowing deep sleep (Fan off ) mode. Some drives have drivers 
like Lacie Silerlining that can put a drive to sleep.
