There are hardware solutions to disabling the motherboard L2 cache. 
Of course these are not as elegant as a software solution.

On the 8600, the cache is in a slot.  On the 9600 and 9500, it is my 
understanding that installing (removing?) R31 on the motherboard will 
disable the cache.  But I've never tried the 9500/9600 modification. 
On the S900/J700 installing J38 which is found between the CPU slot 
and the DIMM slots will disable the cache.
