If this is relevant, I typically run 8.6 as my startup OS. I added Rempel's System Disk 3.3.1 to my control panels and regularly use that to boot from 8.6 into 10.2 which is installed on another hard drive.
The one hard drive that that has 8.6 on it only has that one OS, but the other HD has the partitions for 9.1 and 10.2. If, for example, I need to boot into 9.1 from 8.6, I'll use the standard "startup disk" control panel. If I need to boot into 10.2 from my 9.1 partition, I then again choose System Disk 3.3.1 which I also have in my 9.1 control panels. I seem to have no trouble whatsoever booting into 10.2 I do however, from time to time, have a little trouble booting back to 8.6 from 10.2 but it's really not been that big a deal.
