On some older macs the display is dark up until OSX activates the PCI bus or something like that. It comes on eventually and is normal.
If it doesn't come on at all, then that's a problem. If that's the case, sell it and get an ATI Rage Orion. Very reasonable on ebay and works perfectly in OSX on older macs.
