Time the startup time. If it's over 4-5 min, the install went sour. BTW when you take out the battery disconnect the power cord too. I would reformat the drive, do the OS 9.1 installs, get everything ready with XPF on hand and then check the disk with DiskWarrior, Nortons or TechTool Pro (free download micromat.com) and if everything is OK, start your mouse clicks on XPF to X.
