HFS+ does support permission attributes and other UNIX-isms.
The only specific UNIX-ism it doesn't support is that it doesn't
respect case in file and directory names as other UNIX filesystems do.

The quote below was on the Darwin-users list last year.
Jordan Hubbard was one of the people that _started_ FreeBSD and is now
working at Apple, specifically on the BSD subsystem of OS X.

I don't think UFS support has improved since then, I don't remember seeing
"Enhanced UFS support" in any of the release notes for any OS updates since
10.1.1.

If the UFS suport is based on NextStep code, it was designed for 680x0
processors, not PowerPC ;) Code from the 1980's is as likely to be "crufty"
as "well optimized".

We don't really know either way until someone takes the time to "benchmark"
the speed of each filesystem.

If the latest addition of journalling to HFS+ is a indication, support for
UFS is likely to wither and die, in my opinion.
