I don't have this problem at all in OS 9, and that is why I was
wondering. I get no output from the internal speaker, line out/rca or
from the headphone jack. And now it's back at the point where I can
see that iTunes starts to decode & play the mp3 (as in the "levels'
portion of it's main screen where it can optionally show time
remaining, etc) but there is no sound and after a second or less it
stops that too. This is with all Quicktime based apps so pretty much
that means all the available mp3 players that I have found for OSX.

This problem is also apparent from a fresh install of the os on a
seperate partition.

I'm pretty sure that I don't have any shorts or whatnot- this was my
recording/ProTools computer back when I was in OS 9.
