For what it's worth: I have a non-G3/G4 7600 with 190 Mb RAM, running 10.1.5, via XPF, and I am using an APPLE RGB 13" MONITOR, circa 1991, at 640 x 480. Further, I started with an install of 10.0.1 and have run upgrades all the way up to 10.1.5. When I get another G3/G4 card, I"ll upgrade the puppy to JaggedWire and I have complete faith that the old monitor will continue to work just fine.
Granted, it's running as a server so I'm not doing any PhotoShop work on it, but if you use the "autohide" for the Dock and make the icons as small as possible, it WILL work at 640 by 480 with no problems.
