I've had similar. In the end, I booted the Mac to console mode and ran it
from there. It took /ages/ and the console showed loads of interrupt
errors on the Ethernet port, but it got there eventually.
To get to console mode, i.e., with no GUI loaded, log out and log in as a
user called
