Hi guys
I'm new to this list and have been reading with interest for the past week
or so. I took the plunge last night with my 8600/250 with a Sonnet G3
upgrade, using XPostFacto, and got the black screen of death!

So you didn't even get to install? Or you did and got the crash on restart?

I had removed
the firewire and USB PCI cards but not the ATI Rage 128. Nothing would work
- the startup chime, a bit of disk activity, then nothing. I left the
motherboard battery out overnight and did the CUDA reset as described in a
recent post, but it still won't work. Removed the ATI Rage, but still
nothing.

How about your ram? How much and how old? May need to thin it out, make sure it's all good and it matches.....

OS 9.1 is installed on one drive, and OS 9.2.2 on the other, but
unplugging one or the other did nothing, as did holding down C with the OS
9.1 install disk in the drive. Thankfully this is more of a hobby system and
I rely on my G4 for serious work. Has anybody experienced anything similar?

Yes... I eventually replaced the MB (was easy as I had an extra....) as I think the update screwed up the rom on it.... But I'm willing to bet the old MB is still good....

Are there any possible solutions that I have overlooked?

Leave unplugged awhile again without the battery, do a cuda reset for 30 secs, and then try zapping the PRam.... A total reset.

 Would replacing the
original processor affect the outcome?

It didn't for me at the time, BUT on quite a few other occasions, replacing the original processor helped restore normalcy in a machine. If you DO and it works, try installing OSX with it first, and then upgrade after you have X running.

If I do get it running again, should
I give up on OS X and just stick with what works, ie OS 9?

I wouldn't give up. Once I got Jag on here, I have had few problems since....
