I tried resetting the CUDA switch (held it for 30 seconds), and rebooted. Still the same, in that I can start to burn a disc, but the burning eventually stops, with the light on the drive going to a steady yellow, with the drive spinning away, only stoppable by pulling the plug on it.
I then pulled the USB2/Firewire combo card, reset CUDA, rebooted, shut down, re-inserted card, reset CUDA, zapped PRAM, rebooted.. same behavior.
I then took the drive out of it's external enclosure, and attempted to install it as an internal drive. This has always failed in the past, but what the heck, might as well try again. The drive gets recognized, but upon clicking the Burn button, I get a "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION ERROR", just like before. I then pulled the drive, inserted it into a PC, flashed the firmware, and changed the Iomega burner into a true retail Lite-On LTR-48246S (which is what it's labeled as on the drive itself). I then put it back into the Mac, and proceeded to get the same error. I can only assume that Iomega has some funky setup in the hardware itself, since I've read around that the Lite-On retail versions of these drives work successfully in Macs for other people.
So, back into the enclosure the drive went. Next thing I tried, was putting an old 2-port USB2 card into the machine. (reset CUDA, etc.) Same behavior, except this time it locked the system up hard. Out came that card.
I'm just about convinced that this is from the 10.2.8 update. The *only* other thing I did out of the ordinary, was compile and install Webmin not long after applying the update, and played with it a bit. However, I didn't fiddle with any hardware-related settings (not that Webmin really has many, if any), and the only drive-related thing I changed, was that I set up one of my hard drive partitions for sharing. I'm quite confident that Webmin has nothing to do with my burner woes.
So, after a multitude of reboots and coasters, I'm going to try one last thing, in that I'm downloading the 10.2.8 combo update, and am going to try installing it, to see if it makes a difference.
If that doesn't work, is it possible to go back to 10.2.6, by simply downloading and installing it's combo update, or is completely reinstalling the OS, and updating only to 10.2.6, my only hope?
A note to Simon, who is testing his 9600 with a burner for me.. I really appreciate the help, but, since you have an internal burner, I imagine it'll work fine for you. I think my problems stem from having an external USB2 burner, with an oddball USB2 card, combined with the 10.2.8 update "enhancing" the USB2 PCI card support. :-(
As always, if anyone out there has an old-world PCI Mac with a USB2 card and external burner, let me know how the update works for you.
