Holy Mother of Wozniak, does a better video card help.
I guess the folks who claimed OS X didn't do any acceleration other than Quartz Extreme were psychopathically oversimplifying.
The CPU load does go up quite a bit though, even when I'm just typing in a Terminal window. I assume that's the wonky PowerStorm PCI bridge and the generally slower PCI bus that's responsible.
I've also had a bunch of hash on the screen when I had too many Quicktime windows open at once, possibly due to the flashed card. Also, I can't detect any speed difference between 16- and 24- bit mode.
Oh, and it goes up to around 1800x1500 on my monitor, but that makes my brain hurt.
I've been trying to convince people of this for quite a while now. Even a PCI Rage128 card will give OS X a much needed speed boost, but I figured that if people didn't want one, there'd just be more for me! :)
