My understanding is that USB2.0 card won't work in anything less than B&W. I tried a USB 2.0 Card in PM9600 (at that point only running OS9) and had no luck.
I have a CompUSA store brand 2 port USB 2.0 card working fine in my UMAX S900 Mac clone (Very similar to a 9600, I believe) running OS 9.1.
Of course it only works at USB 1.1 speeds (or is it 1.2?) but since that's what all my USB stuff is (digital camera and CD burner) it doesn't matter anyway.
If I ever got OS X running on the S900, I think the card would start working at 2.0 speeds. (If I had any 2.0 stuff to plug into it.)
It's not a combo card though. Did you mean that USB 2.0 combo cards don't work in older Macs?
Sorry I've been guilty of not providing enough info...again.... the card I got was a generic no name USB 2.0 three port - it wouldn't even work at USB 1.x speeds. Someone mentioned or I read somewhere that the B&W was minimum supported config for USB 2.0, but as stated I hadn't installed X onto 9600 at that time so that may have been main reason for it not working.
However, I did have a generic USB 1.x (2 ports)and Firewire (2 ports) card working fine for me on same machine, under X and 9, and it was rock solid. Branded as SoHo (made in Taiwan).
I guess its a bit trial and error with these things, I did have to install firewire Card bus extension and firewire 2.4 or greater (I think) extensions to get it to run happily though under 9.1 - again hacks or extractions from 9.2 (also was a separate downloadable from Apple site)
The 9600 only ever had 10.2 installed (as well as 10.1) and card still worked fine under them as well.
