I am seriously considering setting up one of these, <http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp? skuId=6983561&productCategoryId=pcmcat25300050005&type=product&tab=4&id =1099388685460> for my house. That is a networked music player--a soundbridge. It takes music stored on a networked server and outputs it to a stereo system. So, in effect it is a stereo component, which can play music that is stored in electronic format on one's computer network.
The only fly in the ointment for this device is that it won't play encrypted files downloaded from iTunes music store unless you burn them to a CD and re-rip them (or use a third party program to remove the nudge-nudge-wink-wink encryption in iTunes). For your existing CD library this should work fine. It uses the music sharing mechanism in iTunes (DAAP) to read its music.
The catch is in how the digital music must be stored in order to be accessible to the Sound Bridge. From the listed system requirements it sounds like I need OSX and iTunes.
You should get at least 10.2 (Jaguar) simply because it's more stable and because there's almost no software available for 10.1 or earlier (10.0 should have been 'beta', and 10.1 an 'early adopters' release... they kept changing APIs throughout the 10.1 era so you ended up with programs that would only run under 10.1.2 or 10.1.5 or whatever), but that's not a big hit... it's 2 generations back now and OWC has the CDs pretty cheap.
1) So, I think I need to install OSX on a machine in order to use iTunes. Is that true? Is it true for earlier versions? Of course, the Sound Bridge might not be able to see iTunes on Classic OS even if iTunes will run on Classic.
iTunes for OS 9 was a free download and I'm sure I've got a copy on a CD somewhere even if it's been pulled from Apple. It's a pretty old version, though, but if it supports music sharing it may work, and it sure doesn't hurt to try... you can hold off on upgrading to Jaguar until then.
OS X comes with iTunes, and the "software update" application will update iTunes as well.
2) Can iTunes be used on our unsupported machines? Which versions? Where can I find it/them. I have the choice of a variety of machines, but my main choices are probably a Umax S900 or a Beige G3. I could also do a 7500 or an 8500. I will use all IDE storage either through an Acard or through the Beige's built-in busses.
Jaguar should just install without complaint on a Beige G3. XPostFacto now supports installing Jaguar on any Mac with a PPC604 processor, which I believe your UMAX should have. I think I have a couple of UMAX processor modules and I'd be happy to send you one if you need an upgrade... but the Beige G3 is really the best one to use for this. Do you know if it's got a Rev 1 or Rev 2 motherboard?
3) How does one get one's CDs into iTunes?
You put the CD in the drive and click a button. There's options on the iTunes preferences (under the iTunes menu) to select the bit-rate and format of the music, and whether to play the tracks on the CD while it's ripping them, but it's really that easy.
