The catch is in how the digital music must be stored in order to be
accessible to the Sound Bridge. From the listed system requirements
it sounds like I need OSX and iTunes.
You should get at least 10.2 (Jaguar) simply because it's more stable
and because there's almost no software available for 10.1 or earlier
And having done a bit more research, Sound Bridge says it needs
iTunes 4 or later. I wonder what is the earliest OSX which works
with 4? I see that the latest version available is 4.28 or some such.
it's 2 generations back now and OWC has the CDs pretty cheap.
It looks like about $30, also available from MacResQ for about that price.
iTunes for OS 9 was a free download and I'm sure I've got a copy on a
CD somewhere even if it's been pulled from Apple. It's a pretty old
version, though, but if it supports music sharing it may work, and it
sure doesn't hurt to try... you can hold off on upgrading to Jaguar
until then.
I did some more reading on Roku's site and the OS9.x question is
actually in their FAQ. It says that, "You'll need iTunes version 4.0
or later, which includes music sharing capabilities. (The last
version supported by MacOS 9 was 2.x.) "
Jaguar should just install without complaint on a Beige G3. XPostFacto
now supports installing Jaguar on any Mac with a PPC604 processor,
which I believe your UMAX should have. I think I have a couple of UMAX
processor modules and I'd be happy to send you one if you need an
upgrade...
Thank you for the very kind offer, Peter. I am flush with hardware.
If I use a Umax, I can do this with no additional hardware, except
possibly to build another ATX to Umax Power Supply adapter. Or I
could just use one of the J700s in the garage (identical to an S900,
but 2 fewer PCI slots and desktop instead of tower).
but the Beige G3 is really the best one to use for this. Do
you know if it's got a Rev 1 or Rev 2 motherboard?
Is the revision of the motherboard or the ROM revision the important
thing here? The Beige G3 I have is a late model minitower. The
mother board has the Rage Turbo Pro video chip. The ROM is Rev. C.
However, I was considering picking up a Beige G3 desktop at Goodwill
for this project rather than devoting my G3 MT to it. They had a
bunch of them last time I was there for $30. I have all three ROM
revisions on hand, so if one is favored over the others, I can switch
to the best choice. If the Motherboard revision actually matters,
I'll need to inspect the inside of the machines before purchasing one.
Thanks for the great answers Peter.
