The article you mention is about a different issue associated with the ATI graphics board. I get the sleep issue on my stock Beige G3 running 10.2.8 and the onboard video.
By the way, I've turned of hard drive sleeping, but left the video sleep on. It will still sometimes not come out of sleep in this case. You have to turn off video sleep as well.
