That last is why I would never use an internal modem in any computer
anywhere in the midwest from the gulf coast to the canadian border.

Too many thunderstorms.

I had a lightning bolt hit the transmission lines near my house.
My UPS was full of spattered and condensed metal and my modem was
a paperweight, but no computers were damaged.
