I have found the B&W G3 to be a bit pickier about PC100 and PC133
RAM than the Sawtooths but all the random sticks of PC100 RAM I
have in my office run in my Rev 1 B&Ws.
I just stuck four 64MB PC100 DIMMs in a Rev1 last week for a
client and all of them worked. That B&W is running OS 10.4.3.
In Belgium/ Europe, apple memory is more expensive and even Apple
dealers try the cheapest solution ...
I believe most of the memory I'm using came from other Apple G3s
and G4s but some is from generic sources and almost all has worked
well for me. I have had a few more problems using the same PC100
RAM in B&Ws than in Sawtooth G4s but to be fair, we have had
problems with the same RAM in PCs of the same era. The problems
are not Mac-specific.
Much of what Apple use these days is also the same as some PC
hardware - cannot remember last time I bought a bare HD, RAM,
optical drive etc from Apple, heck even last Epson printer I didn't
buy from Apple. Secret is research and groups like this as well as
websites like www.xlr8yourmac.com
I heard about Imac G5/powermac G5 that were sold with memory that
didn't run stable ...
This does happen from time to time but also happens on the PC side.
It is not an excuse - all computers should come with RAM which
works but no industry delivers products which are 100% problem-
free. The latest Consumer Reports surveys indicate that Apple
hardware is the most dependable in the industry.
I bought some "certified" RAM for my G5 from a non apple dealer and
first were fine later added yet more RAM and the two DIMMS I received
were not a matched pair so misbehaved - dealer was fantastic and
resolved problem quickly and apologised
I'm so tired of this situation that I'm thinking of PC
hardware ... to run linux.. of course ...
PC hardware makes more sense to run linux as it is less expensive
and you have more choices.

Isn't part of the challenge to get an "unsupported mac" to do
something it was never intended to do? My 9600, before it was
"decomissioned", ran Jaguar quite nicely had all slots full and all
12 RAM slots full as well - the G5 I have is certainally quicker at
all things but don't have the joy (and frustration) of dabbling with
hardware that won't cost a few thousand dollars to replace if it gets
fried or damaged. In fact this machine got me out of a pickle when
Apple screwed the Firmware update for Rev A G5 1.8 that I have
My two cents worth anyway
