I'm so tired of this situation that I'm thinking of PC hardware ... to run linux.. of course ...

PC hardware makes more sense to run linux as it is less expensive and you have more choices.

Isn't part of the challenge to get an "unsupported mac" to do something it was never intended to do? My 9600, before it was "decomissioned", ran Jaguar quite nicely had all slots full and all 12 RAM slots full as well - the G5 I have is certainally quicker at all things but don't have the joy (and frustration) of dabbling with hardware that won't cost a few thousand dollars to replace if it gets fried or damaged. In fact this machine got me out of a pickle when Apple screwed the Firmware update for Rev A G5 1.8 that I have

Excellent points. For me it is the fun of using hardware that most (sane) people consider obsolete for tasks they never were designed to do, especially when they actually can perform those tasks quite well.
