I'm less happy with Panther than Jaguar in some ways, and I'm still holding off on cutting over to Tiger.

I'd hold out as long as possible too - only reason I am staying with Tiger is spotlight and mail2. A Rev A G5 1.8 with 2 GIG RAM and 2x 160GB HDs should be enough room to do what the OS needs but alas after several days it seems a restart is in order to get maximum speed back again. Applications mysteriously seem to loose functionality and recover after same restart as well.

It's not limited to my G5, my wife's iBook 1.2 with 768 RAM also suffers same fate as does buddies PowerBook 15inch 1.67 1Gig (Current revision) - don't know why, perhaps it has something to do with all these machines being put to sleep all the time. Any one got some ideas - take it offline direct if you'd like.

It's odd that you see this in so many different models. I have the opposite experience - I have Tiger on a Pismo G3/500 512MB and iBook G3/600 640MB; they get restarted once a month or less and both get daily use and sleep 2 or more times a day. I have not seen slowdown problems at all but we don't really hit the virtual memory much- rarely have more than 4 or 5 programs open at a time (except for the wife's 12 Dashboard widgets).

Only have Panther 10.3.9 on the G5 1.8 SP 768MB at work but it is on 24/7 (never sleeps and is never off). Have to restart maybe every other month for whatever reason but don't like to even install OS patches/updates for the downtime (impatient/lazy). When it's being used 100% for jobs, I fall back to the 7600 G4/400 1GB OS 10.4.1 for use- also on 24/7 but never sleeps (unsupported - relevant topic!). I turned it off for the first time in ~9 months over Christmas break from work.

All installs were on fresh blank partitions with minimal incremental OS upgrades except iTunes and QT.
