I do hope you are right but from what I've seen in PC laptops I aint that impressed with the speed from the so called faster CPUs that they have. Just remember that even now there are parts of the OS that still not 64bit, so I am betting it will take a while to get full Intel code, then port all the supporting apps to full code, etc, etc.
64-bit is a red herring.
I've been using REAL 64-bit operating systems on REAL 64-bit chips for 10 years now, and you do NOT get faster performance from 64-bits. In fact, you usually lose some performance because you're throwing around more zero bits alongside every integer or pointer. What you get is larger memory space, and if you NEED that larger memory space you already know about it and aren't running your software on Windows or OSX... because neither of them are targeted at that market.
The AMD64 processors are faster in 64-bit mode not because it's a 64-bit mode, but because they used the change in mode to fix one of the real deep design problems in the x86 architecture... the time register set. That lets compilers do a MUCH better job of code generation.
Power PC has never had this problem, which is one reason Power PC has beaten x86 in the work-per-megahertz stakes.
The first generation of Intel Macs are going to suffer from the poor instruction set and small register file, yes, but that's got nothing to do with 64-bit on the Power PC or even about a "64-bit operating system". Windows 64 is still a mixed-mode OS with mostly a 32-bit model, and OSX is 64-bit but it's only got 32-bit GUI libraries. Why? Because it's faster.
