Okay, that's about what I thought, we are having trouble with using one of
our portlets in transient mode. Our problem comes when we try to include
one of our portlets in our custom skin using the <channel fname="" /> tag.
We added a home-grown search portlet to the layout so all users will have
access to that portlet on all of their tabs. The default view comes up
just fine but when a user actually tries to search for something, the
results are not displayed. We can workaround this by simply adding the
portlet to the users' layout which I believe causes the portlet to not be
loaded as transient.

My question is, can a transient portal have and respect states so the
search results are shown? If so, what's preventing our portlet's state
from being updated with the users' search results?
