Sunday 26 April 2009 (01 Jumada al-Ula 1430) Blaring speakers removed from 43 Baha mosques Arab News http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1§ion=0&article=121899&d=26&m=4&y=2009 JEDDAH: Inspectors from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs recently removed blaring speakers from 45 mosques in the western province of Baha because they were too loud and smothered out the broadcasts of other mosques. Minister Islamic Affairs Saleh Al-Asheikh has ordered teams to inspect mosques in various parts of the Kingdom and to look for extremely powerful speakers, the Saudi Press Agency said yesterday. The inspectors instructed several imams in Madinah to make the initial summon to prayer over loudspeakers and to only use their internal speaker-systems during prayers. A ministerial survey showed that the volume of mosque speakers in the central province of Qassim was comparatively low. However, some were found with volumes higher than required and given instructions to lower them. The ministry says some mosques now have speakers that can be heard as far as five kilometers away. The result is that mosques in close proximity, especially in places where there are many, drown out each other's broadcasts.
