To be usable, controls do need to be clear, simple to
understand, and easy to read.
I think that the current default on my distro
(Ubuntu's 'Human' theme) and the GNOME default
'Clearlooks' both do this very well.

Beyond that, there's always room for more designs --
see the GNOME art project.
