The reason I wouldn't have used it for movies is because: * It doesn't mix well with other applications, such as masses control etc. Other software have a broader userbase which can provide the needed scripting to make it work. Here we are basically on our own with a difficult SDK (according to some people here). * It has no support for other renderers which might be required to do high quality output in less time. I/we rendered a GI animation of a relatively complex room (modelled by client using inventor) with 3ds-max using v-ray with very little work. I had to give up even working with it within Realsoft3D. Although the builtin renderer does a better job than max/maya default renderers (as _they_ say, haven't tried them much) especially regarding animation antialiasing. * It doesn't handle big scenes very good, becomes too sluggish to do anything. Maybe others have this problem too, but 3ds-max sure handles much more polys. * Sometimes you don't get the results you expect, the software requires a lot of workaround knowlegde. There are workarounds for the most obvious things, which is a shame. For newcomers this can be a bit daunting. * It only does brute force motion blur. This is fine with respect to quality, but if pressed for rendering speed this can really be a problem. And it only support a 360° shutter angle afaik. Other packages may let you choose to do faster but less accurate "geometric motion blur", which is sometimes all you really need. Depth of field I would leave to post. * Its builtin list of effects are quite limited and not too well implemented. Compare 3ds max and Realsoft3D even for something as simple as lens flares. >And in RS (like in all other 3D-apps) there is no "Do what I >think" button. (That's my private wish for V6). Hehe, don't we all :-) Just my 2-8 cents about the subject... Regards Karl This e-mail and any attachment are confidential and may be privileged or otherwise protected from disclosure.
